Hibiscus Mail List

Back in September of 1996, we started an internet mail list to discuss anything related to H. rosa-sinensis, the tropical hibiscus. Grafting, insects, fertilizer, hybridizing, winter protection, etc., it all was covered. Originally it ran on shareware on an old Macintosh computer, an SE/30, via a dial-up connection. From there it went to an iMac running on professional mail list software.

Started with only few hibiscus hobbyists only in the U.S .and Australia, it added hundreds of members, many in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia, both hobbiests and professional hibiscus growers. Personal and business relationships developed among many members.

Eventually, with the threat of computer viruses, it migrated to Yahoo as a Yahoo Group and grew further for years. However with the advent of social media like Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Reddit and the like, activity at this and other Yahoo Groups dropped to the point that Yahoo ended its Groups.
